Lighting Effects
Landscape lighting design for stunning properties
Landscape lighting design involves more than just placing lights throughout your property. There are many different techniques that we employ in our outdoor lighting designs that help us to achieve a warm and inviting atmosphere that includes beautiful lighting effects. Using the following methods combined with LED and low-voltage outdoor lights, Moon Glow Lightscapes can add dimension, texture, and ambiance to your outdoor living space.
Signature Moon Glow Lighting Styles
Water Lighting Effects
Incorporating a pond, waterfall, or other types of landscape water features into your property generally comes at a large expense. Adding lighting to your water feature enables you to enjoy your stunning investments well after sundown. The soft radiance of water flowing is complemented by the radiance emitted from underwater light fixtures that accent moving water and provide a glow to the surrounding foliage.
Shadow Effects
Shadowing includes a play of light and darkness that can be very dramatic and intriguing. When completing a lighting design and layout, Moon Glow notes locations of large hardscapes, statues, and trees to incorporate shadowing and show off unique structural patterns. If you have a large mature tree on your lot, casting a shadow of the striking shapes created by asymmetrical branches on a nearby fence is a creative way to give your yard some evening character.
Light Washing
Achieving a light washing effect on your property or throughout your garden involves positioning the low-voltage outdoor lights at the base of a flat surface. This allows the glow of light to softly pour over the flat surface. The light washing technique is a great way to provide lots of light and can be used to illuminate a number of features on your property, including hedges, the walls of your home, retaining walls, hardscapes, and fences around gardens.
Crosslighting
Crosslighting of landscape features involves the use of two light fixtures, angled in a similar way and pointing towards the same feature. With this lighting effect, a symmetrical luminosity is created, bringing forward texture while softening and avoiding extremes. Crosslighting is a great way to illuminate clusters of plants and bushes or small gardens that are situated around trees throughout a property.
Downlighting
Downlighting involves directing a beam downwards over a plant or landscape feature and can be an excellent way to draw interest toward a single focal point. Downlights often require a nearby mounting location to achieve the required height. This method is also commonly used over doors and entrances and can also be used along fences to cast light down at each post, creating a light border or illuminating a close pathway.
Silhouetting
Silhouetting effects create contrast between two landscape features, most commonly a tree or shrub and an adjacent wall or structure that is lit. With this effect, the plant life appears dark or black and stands out against a bright white background, creating a wow factor for onlookers. Silhouetting is an effective front-of-home lighting technique that can be used to cast garden silhouettes onto the exterior of your home.
Moonlighting
Moonlighting of landscape elements provides you with an effect borrowed from nature. This outdoor lighting effect uses a light fixture placed at a high point to cast light downward. As the light is cast down, the beam diffuses as it filters through branches and other landscape features, casting a gentle shadow on the landscape below with a calming ambiance. Fixtures used for moonlighting effects are often placed high in trees.
Path & Step Effects
Useful to provide both safety and aesthetics; path and step lighting can be used to direct walkers, draw attention to tripping hazards, and showcase interesting walkways. Use the effects of path and step lights to accentuate path materials like interlocking brick or natural stone, and add twinkle to your evening landscape. Deck step lights also create a welcoming effect that draws visitors inward while illuminating steps for safety.
Uplighting
Uplighting effects use LED low-voltage landscape lighting fixtures that are placed on the ground and angled upwards to illuminate trees, shrubs, or man-made structures during the evening hours. The beams of light created from this angle help to define the shape and texture of the element they are illuminating. Depending on your desired look and feel, Moon Glow Lightscapes can tailor uplighting effects to be more intense or subdued.
